It is hard to believe that the construction of the Merano Wandelhalle around 1850 met with great resistance from the population, as this part of the Passer bank was used for washing clothes. Thanks to the far-sightedness of the mayor of the time, Valentin Haller, the building was nevertheless realized in order to make the then flourishing spa town of Merano richer for its guests with this attraction. From then on, the Wandelhalle served as a venue for concerts, sporting events and a meeting place for lovers of the fine arts.

In the following decades, the Merano Wandelhalle housed busts and commemorative plaques of Merano's most deserving citizens, and on the walls the renowned artists Franz Lenhart, Rudolf Complojer and Peter Demetz immortalized the beauties of the South Tyrolean landscape through views of the most beautiful villages in the country. On the last Saturday of the month you will always find a colorful flea market at the Wandelhalle (always in the morning).
